According to The Government of British Columbia, you can ride an electric scooter on a road in a pilot community. 

The pilot community has outlined guidelines for the usage of electric scooters on streets and highways:

When the speed limit is 50km/h or lower:

  • Utilize the specified cycling lanes

         or

  • Maintain a position on the right side of the street whenever feasible if there is no cycling lane

Safe Riding

Individuals who ride e-scooters typically possess equivalent rights, regulations, and obligations as those riding bicycles; however, it has more distinct limitations to e-scooters.

Riders must be:

  • 16-years-old or above
  • Wear a helmet
  • Ride alone
  • No drugs or alcohol
  • Limit speed to 24 km/h for e-scooters 

E-scooter Equipment Requirement

Riders must make sure the e-scooter is equipped with:

  • A braking system that meets the minimum requirements for stopping
  • Wheels that are no more than 430mm in diameter
  • A bell or horn
  • A white or amber light on the front of the device when operated between sunset and sunrise (note: if the device is not equipped with a light an operator may carry or wear a light on their person when operating the device)
